Statement

Throughout the 243-year history of Dartmouth College great leaders have risen to the challenges posed by changing times. President William Jewett Tucker (1893-1909) oversaw a major construction program and more than tripled the size of both the faculty and student body that brought Dartmouth national recognition. In response to a new international post-World War II dynamic, John Sloan Dickey (1945-1970) launched both the Great Issues course for seniors and foreign study abroad. John Kemeny (1970-1981) pushed Dartmouth to the forefront of the computing age and implemented coeducation and the Dartmouth Plan.

The prospects for Dartmouth College have never been brighter or more promising. The caliber of the student body and faculty is at an all-time high. The construction programs of the last fifteen years have ushered the physical plant into the twenty-first century. The College weathered the financial crisis of 2008 and its aftermath and made the necessary quick and decisive budgetary decisions to deal with the new reality. Nevertheless significant challenges exist. As President Kim has pointed out, American universities are largely perceived as the best in the world today, but that has not always been the case and may not be the case going forward. Nothing can be taken for granted. Presidents Tucker, Dickey and Kemeny courageously pursued ambitious and far-reaching agendas that were at times controversial but propelled Dartmouth forward and made it a better institution. I believe in President Kim’s vision and leadership and the team he has assembled.

I entered Dartmouth College in the fall of 1974. At our freshman convocation, President Kemeny told us that by the year 2000 we would all have a computer in our home. I thought he was crazy. Little did I realize that I would have a career financing, guiding and working with many of the leading technology companies in the world.

I created a business out of an idea and loved every minute of its creation. I have sat on many professional and civic boards through the years and enjoyed significant leadership responsibilities. I have learned much from witnessing expert fellow board members in action. An effective board member is prepared, not afraid to ask the tough questions, respectful of diverse views, and doesn't let his or her ego enter the picture.

I have more than thirty years of post-Dartmouth personal, professional, and life experiences to bring to the board. I would like to serve the institution that has given so much to me. I would be honored to receive your support and trust.
