Statement
I adopt the statement of J. Michael Murphy and urge the election of our entire Dartmouth United slate.
Dartmouth’s governance conflicts have exhausted the alumni body, diverted focus on other pressing issues, and attracted media scrutiny. In order to improve the situation, we propose a return to civility: renewing the agreement that the board be composed of half alumni nominees, half board nominees. Under this agreement, alumni cooperatively participated in the life of the college for over 100 years. The recent curtailment of parity has brought severe, continuing conflict. If elected our first priority will be negotiating with the Board (many of whom, like President Jim Kim, are new Trustees who had nothing to do with the 2007 decision) in order to pursue a return to parity.
In these difficult economic times, the college needs to focus on regaining its financial strength. The best way to do this is to restore the parity relationship that has fostered passionate alumni contribution and involvement for over 100 years.
